Celebrating the Woman I Am Becoming: My Journey in Engineering
By Fisiwe Ngilande | Project Lead: Urban Infrastructure
My journey in engineering has been one of continuous growth, learning, perseverance and self-discovery. It has been shaped by the technical knowledge and experience I have gained, the people who believed in me, the opportunities I received and the challenges that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Engineering has become more than a profession to me; it is a platform through which I can solve problems, contribute to communities, develop myself and encourage others following a similar path.
My interest began with curiosity about the infrastructure around us. **Who came up with these ideas? Why were they designed this way, and how were they built?** I wanted to be in the room where ideas were developed, decisions were made and designs that could transform people’s lives were brought to reality.
University taught me engineering theory, problem-solving and fundamental concepts, but the workplace taught me how to apply those principles to engineering problems. I learnt that the industry requires more than technical knowledge. It also requires communication, collaboration, stakeholder management, accountability, resilience and the ability to meet deadlines. My earlier years as a graduate were filled with learning, asking questions, receiving criticism, making mistakes and gradually developing my technical capabilities.
Joining Naidu Consulting marked an important chapter in my journey. It gave me the opportunity to contribute to large-scale engineering projects while working alongside professionals who continually challenged me to improve. One lesson has stayed with me:
“Not knowing something does not mean that you are incapable of learning it.”
As I took on greater responsibility, my technical experience and confidence grew. My work expanded across water, sanitation, stormwater and associated infrastructure, while requiring me to engage with clients, authorities, consultants and multidisciplinary teams. With every project came another lesson.
I learnt that technical competence is important, but it is only part of becoming a well-rounded professional. Communication, accountability, collaboration, integrity and the ability to make sound engineering decisions are equally important.
I also learnt that confidence does not always come before opportunity. Sometimes, you have to accept the opportunity, step into an uncomfortable position and allow the experience to build your confidence. Each time I stepped outside my comfort zone, I discovered that I was capable of more than I had initially believed. Today, I can walk into a boardroom, contribute to the conversation and trust the value I bring to the table.
“You are only as good as your appetite to grow.”
Mentorship has also played a vital role in my journey. It can happen through a design review, constructive criticism, advice after a difficult meeting or someone patiently explaining something you do not understand. Because others took the time to guide me, I feel a responsibility to share what I have learnt and support students and young professionals.
This connects with Naidu Consulting’s commitment to supporting, developing and empowering young professionals and women in engineering. Growth is not only about how far I can progress, but also about how many people I can positively influence along the way.
My message to women entering the profession is simple:
Show up. Do the work. Keep learning. Take the opportunity. Add value.
My career has challenged me technically and personally, but every experience has strengthened my determination, resilience and ability to stand firm in who I am. I have been underestimated, but I refuse to let assumptions about my age or gender define my capabilities, I choose to let my work, professionalism and commitment speak for me. Clock it!
You will not always feel confident or know the answer, and you will make mistakes but none of those things mean that you do not belong. Find a mentor, set short- and long-term goals, build your network and take opportunities even when they scare you.
One of the greatest things Naidu Consulting has given me is opportunity and the room to grow. My journey is still unfolding, and I look forward to continuing to learn, contribute and create opportunities for those coming behind me.
A quote that resonates deeply with my career journey:
“The mystery of design lies in this: technical drawings can evolve into complex infrastructure, and I have the privilege of contributing to that transformation.”
