Honouring Heritage: A Journey with Naidu Consulting…by Zakhele Bhengu

My name is Zakhele Bhengu, and I have the privilege of growing with Naidu Consulting since 2019, first as an in-service student through the Academy of Excellence and now as a Civil Technologist within the Urban Infrastructure Division. This journey has been both transformative and rewarding, marked by continuous learning, meaningful challenges, and personal milestones.
I firmly believe that our background, morals, and values play a significant role in shaping the people we eventually become. I grew up in an orphanage from when I was 7 years old to 19 years, and it a place that shaped not only my childhood but also laid the foundation of who I am today. Growing up without the guidance of a traditional family structure taught me the importance of perseverance, self-reliance, self-acceptance, and community. These lessons became the driving force behind my education and personal growth, reminding me that our beginnings do not define our future, they prepare us for it.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of the civil engineering industry, and the reason I am passionate about it, is the positive change it brings to communities. Civil engineering is not just about technical solutions it’s about sustainability and empowerment. Projects such as tarred roads, water supply, and sanitation services create opportunities, restore dignity, and uplift disadvantaged communities. This aligns with Naidu Consulting’s vision of delivering solutions that have a lasting impact on society.
The Academy of Excellence played a critical role in shaping my foundation. Its structured and rigorous programme exposed me to various divisions within the company, where I gained both technical and professional experience. The team’s patience and dedication exemplified Naidu’s values of collaboration and integrity, as they equipped me with practical skills in design software, project processes, and problem-solving.
In 2020, I was absorbed into Naidu Consulting as a Junior Civil Technician. I soon began taking ownership of tasks such as preparing technical drawings, conducting site inspections, and contributing to project teams. Working on projects like the eThekwini Municipality Bulk Reservoir Inlets and Outlet Metering challenged me to adapt and sharpen my skills under pressure. These experiences reinforced the importance of innovation and adaptability, values that Naidu Consulting consistently demonstrates in every project.
Looking back, I am deeply grateful for Naidu’s investment in people and its culture of trust and growth. The company has not only provided me with opportunities but has also created an environment where individuals are empowered to thrive, learn, and contribute meaningfully. As Naidu continues to grow, I am excited to grow with it committed to upholding the very values that make it unique.
As a young Zulu man, heritage to me represents identity, pride, and responsibility. It is more than celebrating culture through language, attire, or traditions it is about living the principles of respect, unity, and ubuntu. This Heritage Day at Naidu Consulting, let us remember that by embracing each other’s cultures and uniqueness, we foster a workplace that is inclusive, collaborative, and strengthened by diversity. Together, we create an environment where every individual feels valued, trusted, and empowered.
Happy Heritage Day
